Meta is bringing checkout inside its apps. With "AI checkout," a shopper completes an order without leaving Facebook or Instagram — discovery and purchase meet in the very place where hundreds of millions of people spend their time.
What is Meta's AI checkout?
It is an in-app checkout: payment happens inside Meta's apps (Facebook, Instagram), not on the merchant's site. The feature, launched as a US pilot, aims to remove the friction between discovering a product in the feed and buying it.
Who powers it: PayPal, Adyen
Meta is not reinventing payments: it builds on agentic commerce service providers. The first public rollout was enabled via PayPal's Agentic Commerce Services. In parallel, Adyen announced (June 2026) that its Adyen Agentic suite is compatible with Meta's AI checkout. This multi-provider logic is consistent with the idea of an open standard: the merchant keeps the choice of its payment partner.
Early retailers
Per trade press, Debenhams Group became the first UK retailer to enable in-app checkout on Meta for its US customers, with its brands Karen Millen, boohoo, boohooMAN and PrettyLittleThing. The pitch: meet the customer where they discover fashion, and turn discovery into purchase "in seconds."
Meta, UCP and social commerce
Meta is among the UCP backers cited by Shopify (Spring '26 Edition, June 2026). AI checkout thus becomes one more buying surface in the agentic ecosystem, alongside ChatGPT (OpenAI), the Universal Cart (Google) and the Shop app. For social commerce, it's a turning point: Instagram and Facebook move from discovery channel to transactional point of sale.
What it means for a merchant
The same rule as everywhere else: what lets you show up and convert on these surfaces is a clean, structured product feed and an agent-ready payment stack. Meta's AI checkout adds a surface; it does not change the underlying work. Brands with a strong Instagram and Facebook presence do, however, have a particular interest in testing it early.
