What is the Universal Commerce Protocol in one sentence?

A shared semantic and transactional substrate that lets heterogeneous AI agents discover, compare, buy from and report back on heterogeneous merchants without bespoke integration.

Is the Universal Commerce Protocol an actual specification?

No. It is a conceptual frame for the composite infrastructure layer forming between commerce and AI systems — made of schema.org, GS1, MCP, Stripe ACP, Visa Intelligent Commerce and more. The components are real; the label is editorial shorthand for their convergence.

How is UCP different from llms.txt?

llms.txt is a site-level guidance file for LLM crawlers on any website. UCP is scoped to commerce-specific primitives: catalogs, offers, stock, policies, identifiers and transactional intent. Different object, different audience.

How is UCP different from AI SEO / GEO?

AI SEO focuses on content-site visibility in AI answer surfaces. UCP addresses the commerce-specific infrastructure layer — how catalogs and offers are exposed, not how blog posts are ranked.

Do I need to be on Shopify / a specific platform?

No. Agent-readiness is a property of the catalog, feeds and policies — expressible on any stack. Platforms make some parts easier, but the discipline is platform-neutral.

Can I block AI agents from crawling my catalog?

You can signal via robots.txt and user-agent rules. Practical cost of being unreachable is rising. The better default is selective exposure with clear commercial terms.

Will classical SEO become irrelevant?

No. Classical SEO is a precondition for the same catalog to be picked up by agent-driven surfaces. Structured data, canonical URLs and performance stay mandatory. What is new is intent-driven retrieval and policy-awareness.

How do I know which agents are visiting my site?

Log user-agent strings. Major players declare identifiable UAs (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, etc.). Segment your analytics by UA and track crawl-to-conversion flows.

What should I do first if I only have budget for one thing?
